Description

These French Onion Cups combine all the comforting flavors of French onion soup into bite-sized appetizers made with flaky puff pastry and rich Gruyère cheese. Perfect for gatherings, these savory treats are easy to make and sure to impress.


Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 4 medium onions, thinly sliced
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon fresh thyme, chopped
  • ½ cup beef broth
  • 3 tablespoons heavy cream
  • 1 package puff pastry, thawed
  • 12 tablespoons grated Gruyère cheese

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375°F and grease a 12-cup muffin tin.
  • Heat olive oil and butter in a large pan. Sauté onions until caramelized (25–30 minutes). Season with salt, pepper, and thyme.
  • Add beef broth; simmer until reduced. Stir in heavy cream and let cool.
  • Roll out puff pastry and cut into 2½-inch squares. Press each square into the muffin tin.
  • Fill each pastry cup with 2 tablespoons of onion mixture and top with 1 tablespoon of Gruyère cheese.
  • Bake for 20–22 minutes until golden. Cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Store leftover onion cups in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Reheat in a 350°F oven for 8–10 minutes.
  • For a vegetarian version, use vegetable broth instead of beef broth.
