  • Yield: 6 sandwiches 1x

Description

This Sloppy Joe Grilled Cheese combines crispy, buttery bread with gooey melted cheese and a rich, flavorful homemade Sloppy Joe filling. Perfect for a quick and satisfying meal!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter
  • ½ yellow onion, chopped
  • ½ green bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • ¾ cup ketchup
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 2 tsp yellow mustard
  • ½ tsp kosher salt
  • ¼ tsp ground black pepper
  • 12 slices American cheese
  • 12 slices white bread
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter (for grilling)

Instructions

  • Cook the ground beef in a skillet over medium-high heat until browned. Drain excess fat.
  • Melt butter in the skillet and sauté the onions and bell peppers until soft. Add minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds.
  • Stir in ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, salt, and black pepper. Return beef to the skillet and cook until thickened. Remove from heat.
  • Butter one side of each bread slice. Place six slices (buttered side down) on a cutting board. Add a slice of cheese, then a scoop of Sloppy Joe mixture, followed by another slice of cheese. Top with the remaining bread slices (buttered side up).
  • Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat. Grill each sandwich for 3-5 minutes per side until golden brown and the cheese is melted.
  • Let rest for a minute, slice, and serve hot.

Notes

  • Use sourdough or Texas toast for a heartier sandwich.
  • Mix cheeses like cheddar or provolone for extra flavor.
  • Let the Sloppy Joe mixture cool slightly before assembling to prevent soggy bread.
