This Sloppy Joe Grilled Cheese combines crispy, buttery bread with gooey melted cheese and a rich, flavorful homemade Sloppy Joe filling. Perfect for a quick and satisfying meal!
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb lean ground beef
- 1 tbsp unsalted butter
- ½ yellow onion, chopped
- ½ green bell pepper, chopped
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- ¾ cup ketchup
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
- 2 tsp yellow mustard
- ½ tsp kosher salt
- ¼ tsp ground black pepper
- 12 slices American cheese
- 12 slices white bread
- 4 tbsp unsalted butter (for grilling)
Instructions
- Cook the ground beef in a skillet over medium-high heat until browned. Drain excess fat.
- Melt butter in the skillet and sauté the onions and bell peppers until soft. Add minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds.
- Stir in ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, salt, and black pepper. Return beef to the skillet and cook until thickened. Remove from heat.
- Butter one side of each bread slice. Place six slices (buttered side down) on a cutting board. Add a slice of cheese, then a scoop of Sloppy Joe mixture, followed by another slice of cheese. Top with the remaining bread slices (buttered side up).
- Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat. Grill each sandwich for 3-5 minutes per side until golden brown and the cheese is melted.
- Let rest for a minute, slice, and serve hot.
Notes
- Use sourdough or Texas toast for a heartier sandwich.
- Mix cheeses like cheddar or provolone for extra flavor.
- Let the Sloppy Joe mixture cool slightly before assembling to prevent soggy bread.
